Home - Journeys - Netherland, Ameland, 2025 - Thursday, April 17, 2025

We slept well in the Van Heeckeren Hotel in Nes on Ameland .
Just like yesterday, breakfast is excellent again, and we also take a few sandwiches for lunch, just like yesterday.
The weather isn't great for today, with a chance of rain and it won't be warm. But we don't really care, we're driving back home today, and we'll only be cycling the stretch from the hotel to the ferry, the rest of the time we'll be on the ferry and in the car.

After breakfast, we pack everything, our clothes in a small suitcase, the rest in one of the four panniers we have with us. After checking out, which is incredibly quick, we load everything onto our bikes, and at a quarter past eleven we cycle to the ferry, which leaves at a quarter past twelve. It's a ten-minute bike ride, so we're way too early, but we can already check in, meaning we show our tickets, which are scanned. When we arrive by bike, we just see the earlier ferry departing. And then we have to wait until the ferry we're taking arrives so we can board. Fortunately, we can sit inside, where at least it's not cold. And we can already pay the parking fee for the car.
When the boat arrives and all the cars, bicycles, and walking passengers have disembarked, we can board; we have the impression the boat isn't too crowded.
The boat departs on time, and 45 minutes later we arrive in Holwerd. We cycle to our parked car. We unload all the luggage from our bicycles, including the batteries, and put them in the back of the car, then we put the bike rack on the car, and the bicycles on top of that, and we drive to the exit. Paying in advance worked (of course), and we can continue our journey.

The return trip to Apeldoorn is uneventful, first on provincial roads in Friesland, where we see a few young geese for the first time this year at a roundabout.
Then from Leeuwarden on the highway, via Zwolle and other destinations, and a stop for something to eat, we arrive home at a quarter to four.
We unload everything from the car and tidy our luggage inside.
The trip to Ameland is over.
